Lesson 3: Make a great first impression
You started filling in some of the information for your homepage in the previous course, but now we’re going to fully customize it. Your homepage is the very first thing customers will see when they visit your website.
Your homepage should introduce who you are, what you do, and how you can help.
This is your big chance to make an awesome first impression, and we know you’re going to wow your audience.
Taglines and CTAs are critical
Two important things to include on your homepage are a tagline and a call-to-action. Your tagline should reflect your unique value proposition—the thing that makes your business special.
For example, if you’re a pizza restaurant, maybe you are unique because you cater to special diets and food allergies. Your tagline might be “We make delicious pizzas for every taste bud and every food allergy”, and your CTA might be “Call us to place a phone order.”
TIPS FOR CREATING AN EFFECTIVE HOMEPAGE:
- Use a beautiful main photo
- Keep it simple (think “micro-content” that is short and sweet)
- Incorporate a catchy tagline to quickly sum up what your business is about
- Put your CTA at the very top of the page
- Link customers from the Home page to other pages to learn more
Activity: Brainstorm your homepage
Let’s start brainstorming the content for your homepage. Download the “Content Creation” worksheet below, which will walk you through the specific content you’ll need. We’ll use this worksheet throughout the rest of the course.
For now, just fill out the “Homepage” sections of the worksheet. This will help you nail down the headline, tagline, description, CTA, and other key information for your homepage.
