Lesson 3: What are on-page, off-page, and technical SEO?
When talking about SEO, you may hear people talk about on-page versus off-page SEO. Here’s what this means.
- On-page SEO refers to how your website content can be optimized for search engines
- Off-page SEO refers to how the activities you and others perform off your website impact your search engine ranking
Both on-page and off-page SEO are needed to boost your rankings
For example, on-page SEO is determined by what you have on your website. The content on your webpages, including both the visible text and the “invisible” meta tags (i.e., data found in the source code of a page) impact your site ranking. This data tells a search engine what your website is about, and this information plays a large role in helping customers find your website.
On the other hand, off-page SEO is determined by what people do off your webpages. For example, where people visit your site and how they reach you matters. If Google sees that many people link to your website from other credible websites, this can help your rankings.
Technical SEO
A third, less talked-about type of SEO is technical SEO. According to Moz, technical SEO refers to website and server optimizations that help search engine spiders crawl and index your site, and it also includes pretty much any technical processes you implement to improve your search rankings.
UHH, WHAT?
Spiders and crawling? Sounds a bit scary, right? Let’s simplify this. Basically, when you understand the technical aspects of how search engines find and rank websites, you can better understand how to optimize the technical aspects of your website to increase its ranking. You can do this through technical SEO.
Each of these elements works together to create effective SEO for your site
Together, on-page, off-page, and technical SEO are all important in optimizing your organic search engine ranking
